    A fluorine-containing optically active compound represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents a straight chain alkyl or alkoxy group having from 6 to 14 carbon atoms or a 4-alkylphenyl or 4-alkoxyphenyl group having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 represents a straight chain alkyl group having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms; C.sup.* represents an asymmetric carbon atoms; and X represents a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom, provided that X represents a fluorine atom when R.sub.1 contains a phenyl group, and a liquid crystal composition containing the same are disclosed. The compound (I) has large spontaneous polarization and low viscosity to achieve a fast response time. In the N.sup.* phase of the compound (I), the helical pitch has small temperature dependence.

    Optically active compounds are represented by the formula: where R₁ is a C6-14 straight chain alkyl or alkoxy group or a C8-12 4-alkylphenyl or 4-alkoxyphenyl group; R₂ is a straight chain C1-9 alkyl group; C* is an asymmetric carbon atom; and X is a hydrogen or fluorine atom, provided that X is fluorine when R₁ contains a phenyl group. 29 such compounds are synthesised and their properties given in Table 1, namely large spontaneous polarization and low viscosity to achieve a fast response time, and in the N* phase of the compound (I), the helical pitch has a small temperature dependence. Liquid crystal compositions contain a compound (I) and can be used as a chiral dopant for an STN or TN mode of liquid crystal element. The compounds can be mixed with compounds which are not optically active and which show a smectic C phase, 23 of which are listed. These compositions are useful in opto-electric elements.

    A liquid crystal composition comprising at least one mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I): wherein R1 and R2 respectively denote a linear or branched alkyl group having 1 - 16 carbon atoms optionally substituted; Z1 denotes a single bond, -0-, -COO- or -OCO-, X1 denotes halogen; and A1 denotes a single bond or and at least one mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (II): wherein R3 and R4 respectively denote an alkyl group having 2 - 16 carbon atoms optionally substituted; Y1 denotes a single bond, Z2 and Z3 respectively denote a single bond, -0-, or A2 and A3 respectively denote a single bond, X2 and X3 respectively denote hydrogen, F, Cl, Br, -CH3, -CN or -CF3; and k is 0 or 1 with the proviso that Z2 is a single bond when A2 is a single bond, and Z3 is a single bond when As is a single bond and k is 0. The liquid crystal composition is easily aligned by a simple rubbing method to provide a uniform monodomain and further provides wider driving voltage and temperature margins effective for providing a practical ferroelectric liquid crystal device.
