    A distinct structural transformation occurs between a 1D layered SmA phase and 2D layer undulated banana phase via a unique hexagonal columnar phase which may result from different molecular packings as a function of temperature.

    Lateral fluorinated bent-shaped molecules based on a 1,7-naphthalene central core and alkoxy tails can form a switchable hexagonal columnar phase and B4 phase. The columnar phase has a large two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of 65–70 Å and exhibits ferroelectric switching with spontaneous polarization along the column axis.

    We synthesized a novel banana‐shaped molecule based on a 1,7‐naphthalene central core that exhibits a distinct mesomorphism of the nematic‐to‐nematic phase transition. Both the X‐ray profile and direct imaging of atomic force microscopy (AFM) investigations clearly indicates the formation of an anomalous nematic phase possessing a two‐dimensional (2D) tetragonal lattice with a large edge (ca. 59 Å)

    Novel lateral fluorinated bent-shaped molecules based on 1,7- and 1,6-naphthalene central core are prepared. Their mesomorphic properties are discussed in comparison with those of conventional unsubstituted bent-shape molecules.

    Two homologous series of bent-shaped molecules composed of low bent-angle naphthalene central core and long alkoxy tail or alkylthio tail, N(1,7)-n-OPIMB and N(1,7)-n-SPIMB (n = 20, 22), respectively, were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Compared to the direct transition from the isotropic phase to the chiral B4 phase examined in N(1,7)-n-OPIMB, N(1,7)-n-SPIMB exhibited a rare Iso-N-col-Col(h)-B4 phase sequence. The combination of the asymmetric low bent-angle 1,7-naphathalene central core and the flexible long alkylthio tail is considered to play an important role in the formation of such a novel phase sequence.
