  The invention provides novel compounds of formula (I). and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, and lower alkoxy, or any adjacent two of R, to R4 taken together represent an alkylene group containing from 3 to 5 carbon atoms or a 1,4-buta-1,3- dienylene group.   A series of 2-substituted-3-diazoquinolin-4-ones is prepared by the reaction of 2-substituted-3-amino-4-chloroquinolines with sodium nitrite in sulfuric acid.
