Conjugates derived from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and methods of use thereof are disclosed, useful for, inter alia, identifying and localizing the site of pathology and/or inflammation responsible for the sensation of pain in a patient; for identifying the sites of primary, secondary, benign, or malignant tumors; and for diagnosing infection or confirming or ruling out suspected infection. The NSAID-based conjugates contain an imaging moiety. The conjugates concentrate at sites of increased cyclooxygenase expression, thus revealing the sites of increased prostaglandin production, which is correlated with pain and inflammation, and correlated with tumor presence and/or location. Identifying areas of increased COX expressing can also aid in screening for infections.

In order to optimize the performance of the AMBRI(TM) biosensor (Nature 1997, 387, 580), a variety of hydrophilic linkers between the hydrophobic bilayer membrane and the gold surface have been synthesized. The principal components are prepared from phytanyl hemisuccinate, which is linked by repeating ethylene glycol or propylene glycol units to a second succinic acid unit. The syntheses of analogous substances in which the ester links are replaced by amide and by ether links are also described.

The synthesis and characterization of 5 new crown compounds 3 and some derivatives 4, containing a 1,3,5-triazine ring as subunit, based on the aminolysis of cyanuric chloride with diamines, is described. The alkali selectivity of some crown ligands were investigated by the ESI mass spectrometry.
