    Isothermal section (400°C) of the phase diagram of Y–Al–Ga ternary system in the region up to 33.3 at.% Y

    A part of the isothermal section (400 degreesC) of the phase diagram of the Y-Al-Ga ternary system (up to 33.3 at.% Y) was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Eight single-phase regions (including solid solution regions of the binary compounds) were found to exist at this isothermal section. Four ternary phases were found and their crystal structures were determined, namely: 1-YAl2.75-2.60Ga1.25-1.40 (own type structure), 2-YAl1.90-1.60Ga2.10-2.40 (own type structure), 3-YAl0.4Ga2.60 (Mg3Cd), and 4-YAl0.90-0.70Ga1.10-1.30 (AlB2). The composition ranges of the ternary phases and solid solution regions of YAl3, YAl2, YGa6 and YGa2 were determined. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Enthalpies of formation for the AlY and AlYNi intermetallic compounds

    A method of liquid-metal solution calorimetry has been applied for thermochemical research of intermetallic compounds in the Al-Y and Al-Y-Ni systems. Heats of dissolution for the following intermetallics: Al3Y; Al2Y; Al2Y3 and Al4YNi in liquid Al were measured with the help of a high-temperature isoperibol Calvet-type calorimeter. Using these values, standard molar enthalpies of formation for the listed compounds were calculated: Delta(f,298)H(m) degrees(Al3Y) = -185.6 +/- 7.2 kJ mol(-1); Delta(f,298)H(m) degrees(Al2Y) = -160.4 +/- 7.5 kJ mol(-1); Delta(f,298)H(m) degrees(Al2Y3) = -234.4 +/- 19.5 kJ mol(-1); Delta(f,298)H(m) degrees(Al4Y-Ni) = -361.5 +/- 12.0 kJ mol(-1) Comparisons have been made with some available experimental data and theoretical values calculated from the Miedema model with the help of parameters recommended in different papers.
  • The 800 K isothermal section of the Y–Al–Sb phase diagram

    The isothermal section of the Y-Al-Sb ternary system at 800 K has been investigated mainly by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) with the aid of differential thermal analysis (DTA), optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It consists of 12 single-phase regions, 23 two-phase regions and 10 three-phase regions. The maximum solid solubility of Al in Y5Sb3 is about 27 at.%. No ternary compounds were found.   • Effect of Gd and Fe doping on magnetic properties of Al87Y5Ni8 amorphous alloy

    In this paper we present and discuss magnetic properties of the Al87Y5Ni8, Al87Y4Gd1Ni8, Al87Gd5Ni8, Al87Y4Gd1Ni4Fe4 and Al87Gd5Ni4Fe4 amorphous alloys. The examinations have been concentrated on a possible magnetic ordering at low temperatures and its modification by amorphous surroundings as well as different magnetic moment of alloying additions. It was shown that magnetic properties of the Al87Y5Ni8 amorphous base alloy correspond to a superparamagnetic body with Ni magnetic clusters. Magnetic moment of Ni atom in amorphous aluminum matrix is found to be 0.3 mB that corresponds to less than 50 Ni atoms per one cluster. Gd doping of the base alloy leads to a decrease of the resultant magnetic moment of Ni clusters that can be explained by some antiferromagnetic coupling Ni-Gd and Ni-Ni within magnetic clusters.   • Real time synchrotron studies on amorphous Al85Ce5Ni8Co2 and Al85Y5Ni8Co2 alloys

    The crystallization of Al85Ce5Ni8Co2 and Al85Y5Ni8Co2 alloys was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD). Continuous heating DSC measurements revealed that Al85Ce5Ni8Co2 and Al85Y5Ni8Co2, alloys exhibit a glass transition followed by a super-cooled liquid region where crystallization occurs through a two- and three-stage process, respectively. The crystallization sequences were also observed in situ by means of XRD using a third generation synchrotron source. During the first crystallization stage, the primary precipitation of alpha-Al takes place only in the Al85Y5Ni8Co2 alloy while in the Al85Ce5Ni8Co2 alloy, a simultaneous precipitation of a metastable Al11Ce3 and alpha-Al was observed. The final microstructure contained alpha-Al, Al3Y/Ce, Al9Co2, and Al3Ni phases. The crystallization was monitored both during heating of the amorphous alloy and during cooling of the liquid alloy in order to detect possible differences in the nature of the crystallization.
