Reaction of alkyl naphthalenes 1–3, 17 and 18 with dichlorocarbene gives the spirononatrienes 4–6 and 19–22. Similarly, 9-methylphenanthrene (24) yields 25, toluene (26) yields 27–29, o-xylene (31) yields 32–34, m-xylene (36) yields 37, p-xylene (39) yields 40, 2-methyl anisole (42) yields 43 and 44, and mesitylene (46) yields 47.
