Carbohydrate containing dimeric (or gemini) surfactants were synthesized starting from D-glucose. Three different spacers (glutaryl, succinyl and terephthaloyl) were used to link the sugar moieties through O-2 or O-6. The critical micellar concentration (CMC) for these new compounds was ten-fold smaller than that of their monomeric counterpart. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
