This invention provides a process for producing tetrahydrofuran by the reaction of 3-(5'-alkyl-1',3'-dioxane)propionaldehyde and/or 3-(5'-alkyl-1',3'-dioxane)propanol and/or 4-hydroxybutanal with hydrogen in an aqueous medium having a pH between about 0.1 and 5. Maintenance of the reaction medium within the specified acidic range of pH is an important feature of the invention process.

A process for hydroformylating a cyclic acrolein acetal to form the corresponding cyclic acrolein acetal aldehyde, said process comprising conducting said hydroformylation in the presence of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, rhodium complex catalyst and 1-3%of excess triphenyl phosphite ligand based on the acetal at a pressure of carbon monoxide of from 5-20 psia and a pressure of hydrogen of from 10- 400 psia maintained with a gas having a H2:CO ratio of from 1:1-20:1 and a temperature of from 100-115°C, the rhodium content of said catalyst being 1-50 ppm of rhodium based on the acetal.

As vehicle resin for antifouling paints, a vinyl polymer having a plurality of primary amine-bound pendant groups formed by the dehydration-condensation reaction of carbonyl group with the primary amine is used. The film of an antifouling paint containing this vehicle resin gradually release a primary amine exhibiting antifouling activity upon hydrolysis with sea water, while the film gradually dissolves from the surface.
