    Synthesis and characterization of thianthrene-based epoxy with high refractive index over 1.7
    摘要:
    A novel glycidyl resin 2,7-bis(-epoxypropylthio)thianthrene (4SEP) with high refractive index was synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, FT IR and FD-MS analyses. The kinetics of 4SEP cured with methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MeHHPA) was investigated by nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry. The results revealed that the reactivity of 4SEP was higher compared with that of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) due to the weakened electron-withdrawing effect of thioether on the epoxy group. The thermal properties and refractive index of 4SEP/MeHHPA were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyses, Abbe refractometer, prism coupler, and compared with those of the DGEBA/MeHHPA. Experimental results showed that, due to the introduction of thianthrene and thioether units, the glass transition temperature (T-g) was slightly enhanced, while the thermal stability was reduced. The refractive index of 4SEP was over 1.7000, and the refractive index of 4SEP/MeHHPA was up to 1.6808.

    A highly refractive, transparent, and totally colorless poly(phenylene thioether) (PPT) containing a triazine unit has been developed. A new aromatic dithiol, thianthrene-2,7-dithiol, with a high sulfur content was designed and synthesized in order to develop PPTs with high refractive indices and high glass transition temperatures (Tgs).     A resin composition capable of forming a cured film having a high refractive index, high transparency and high heat resistance, and a polymer which is used for the resin composition. A polymer having a structural unit of Formula (1): wherein A1 and A2 are each independently an —O— group or a —C(═O)O— group; X is a divalent organic group having at least one aromatic ring or heterocyclic ring, wherein, when the X has two or more aromatic rings or heterocyclic rings, the rings are optionally bonded to each other via a single bond, are optionally bonded to each other via a heteroatom, or optionally form a condensed ring; and Y is a divalent organic group having at least one aromatic ring or condensed ring. A resin composition, includes: the polymer; a cross-linking agent; and a solvent.

    The disclosure provides thianthrene derivatized monomers and polymers for use in volume Bragg gratings, including, but not limited to, volume Bragg gratings for holography applications. Several thianthrene structures are described, including structures substituted by halogens, sulphur containing groups, phenyl groups, at least one polymerizable group, etc. Thianthrene derivatized polymers in Bragg gratings applications lead to materials with higher refractive index, low birefringence, and less packing in solid state. Thianthrene derivatized monomers/polymers can be used in any volume Bragg gratings materials, including two-stage polymer materials where a matrix is cured in a first step, and then the volume Bragg grating is written by way of a second curing step of a monomer.
