  The paramagnetic complex anions [Fe(NS3)Cl]– [NS3 = N(CH2CH2S)33–] and[Fe(NS3)(CO)]– have been prepared and structurally characterised; with FeCl2, [Fe(NS3)(CO)]– gives the structurally characterised, linear, paramagnetic cluster complex [FeFe(NS3)(CO)-S,S′}2].

  The complexes NEt₄[Fe(NS₃)(CNR)] (1), [FeFe(NS₃)(CNR)}₂-S,S' ] (2), [CoFe(NS₃)(CNMe)}₂-S,S' ] (3), and [NiFe(NS₃)(CNMe)}₂-S,S' ] (4) (R = Me, t-Bu, or C₆H₁₁(Cy)) have been prepared and the X-ray crystal structures of NEt₄[Fe(NS₃)(CNMe)] (1a) and [FeFe(NS₃)(CNCy)}₂-S,S' ] (2c) have been determined. Mössbauer and IR spectroscopic data and room temperature magnetic moments for these complexes are reported.Key words: iron, cobalt, nickel, thiolate, isocyanide.

  of iron(III) acetylacetonate and Et4NCN + Et4NOAc with N(SH)3 gives (Et4N)2[Fe(NS3)}2(μ-CN)]·MeCN 5, which dissociates to Et4N[Fe(NS3)(CN)] 6 and an uncharacterised species in methanol. The above complexes were characterised by microanalyses, IR and magnetic measurements and where appropriate by Mössbauer and ESR spectra; X-ray structural determinations were carried out on 1, 2, 4 and 6.
