    This invention provides LC compositions useful as birefringent materials in electrooptic devices which exhibit zero or low negatively sloped birefringence dispersion (e.g., exhibiting positive birefringence dispersion significantly lower than that of currently available LC compositions) or more preferably positively sloped birefringence dispersion in which birefringence of the material increases with wavelength. The invention provides compounds useful as components of LC compositions which exhibit negative birefringence where n.sub.o is higher than n.sub.e. The compounds of this invention are dimers of LC-like compounds in which the monomers are linked to each other through a high birefringence moiety (dimerization linker). The LC monomers consist of an LC core and one or two tail groups. Preferred monomers for this invention have low birefringence in comparison to the birefrigence of the monomer linking moiety. The dimers have normal positive birefringence dispersion to have birefringence that is lower in absolute value at longer wavelengths. But since they have negative birefringence, their birefringence actually increases (i.e., goes less negative) as wavelength increases.

    A process for controlling the cone tilt angle of a tilted smectic liquid crystal composition comprises the step of combining (a) at least one liquid crystal composition comprising at least one smectic or latent smectic liquid crystal compound comprising (i) an aliphatic fluorocarbon terminal portion comprising a terminal fluoroalkyl or fluoroether group and an alkylene group having at least two carbon atoms and containing at least one catenary ether oxygen atom, (ii) an aliphatic hydrocarbon terminal portion, and (iii) a central core connecting the terminal portions; and (b) at least one liquid crystal composition comprising at least one smectic or latent smectic liquid crystal compound; with the provisos that at least one of the compositions (a) and (b) comprises at least one chiral liquid crystal compound and that the combining of compositions (a) and (b) provides an optically active, tilted chiral smectic liquid crystal composition. The process enables control of cone tilt angle and thereby control of the brightness characteristics of liquid crystal display devices.

    The novel compounds are aryl-2,3-epoxyalkyl ethers or thioethers or the corresponding thiirane compounds having a mesogenic aromatic component and a chiral component having a three-membered heterocyclic ring, wherein, in the general formula (1), ##STR1## the symbols have the following meaning: R.sup.1 =straight-chain or branched (C.sub.1 -C.sub.12) alkyl, where one or two non-neighboring CH.sub.2 groups may be replaced by O or S atoms. A=diazine-2,5-diyl or diazine-3,6-diyl, X and Y=O and/or S, and R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, independently of one another=H, straight-chain (C.sub.1 -C.sub.10) alkyl or branched (C.sub.3 -C.sub.10) alkyl, where R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are not simultaneously H. The compounds are preferably employed in tilted smectic liquid-crystal phases which they convert into ferroelectric liquid-crystal phases; they have high values for spontaneous polarization or they induce high values for spontaneous polarization.
