    Two Schiff base ligands (HL1, HL2) and their Co(III) complexes, [Co(HL1)(L1)] (1) and [Co(HL2)(L2)] (2) [where HL1 = 2-((E)-(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol and HL2 = 2-((E)-(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl)-4-bromophenol] were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic methods. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 have been re-determined by single crystal diffraction at 100K. The ligands and their Co(III) complexes were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities by the disc diffusion, microdilution broth and single spore culture techniques. The antimicrobial activity of the Co(III) complexes and the free ligands exhibit antimicrobial properties and the Co(III) complexes show enhanced inhibitory activity compared with their parent ligand.   • The interplay of O–H⋯O hydrogen bonding in the generation of three new supramolecular complexes of CuII, NiII and CoIII: Syntheses, characterization and structural aspects

    Three new coordination complexes, [Cu(L-1)(H2O)] (1), [Ni(L-2)(2)]center dot CH3CN (2) and [Co(HL3)(L-3)] (3) [where H2L1, N,N'-bis(3-methoxysalicylidenimino)-1,3-diamino-propane; HL2, 2-((E)-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-methyl-propan-2-ylimino)methyl)phenol; H2L3, 2-((E)-(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl)-4-bromophenol] have been synthesized and systematically characterized by elemental analyses, FT-IR, electronic spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and thermogravimetric analyses. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirm that the metal center in complex 1 has distorted square-pyramidal geometry while it is distorted octahedral in the other two complexes. In all the complexes O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bondings assemble the molecular units leading to ordered supramolecular architectures. While both complexes 1 and 2 form infinite one-dimensional arrays through the self organisation of hydrogen bonded ring motifs, complex 3 is a unique star-shaped cyclic hexamer generated through intermolecular hydrogen bonding.   • Ferromagnetic exchange coupling in a new bis(μ-chloro)-bridged copper(II) Schiff base complex: Synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and catalytic oxidation of cycloalkanes

    A new (mu-chloro)-bridged complex [Cu(HL)Cl](2) center dot H2O (1) with the Schiff base ligand H2L, [2-((E)-(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl)-4-bromophenol], has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis and EPR spectroscopic studies. X-ray diffraction studies show that 1 is a binuclear Cu-II complex with a pair of chlorine atoms bridging the copper atoms in a central Cu2Cl2 core. Each copper atom in I adopts a distorted square-pyramidal geometry with the imine nitrogen atom, alkoxy and phenoxy oxygen atoms from the Schiff base ligand and a bridging chlorine atom constructing the basal plane, while the apical position of the pyramid is occupied by the other bridging chlorine atom. Variable temperature susceptibility measurements show that complex I presents the highest ferromagnetic coupling [J = +43.2(5) cm(-1)] reported till date in any doubly chloro-bridged Cu-II dimer, and a weak interdimer antiferromagnetic coupling [J' = -0.276(8) cm(-1)]. The complex also exhibits high catalytic activity towards the oxidation of hydrocarbons using H2O2 as terminal oxidant. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
