The successful oxidative spirocyclization of 1- or 2-naphtholic sulfonamides extends oxidative amidation methods to the naphthalene series. A method to prepare N-unsubstituted spirolactam derivatives of 1-naphthol is also presented.

Novel 1,4-naphthalenediol and 1,4-hydroquinone derivatives of formulas I, II, III and IV and their therapeutic uses as 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, leukotriene inhibitors, antiinflammatory and/or inhibitors of mucus secretion agents are described. Quinol ethers and quinone monoketals are shown to undergo formal anti-Michael addition reactions with allylindium reagents at room temperature to give only ortho allylated phenols in good yields.
The Tethered Counterion-Directed Catalysis (TCDC) approach has been applied to the enantioselective Au(I) catalyzed dearomatizations of 1-naphthols with allenamides. Stereocontrol is ensured by the intramolecular ion-pairing between the chiral gold-tethered phosphate and an iminium unit, that provides a rigid, well-defined chiral environment to the key electrophilic intermediate.
