  Protection of carbonyls as acetals or ketals using Brønsted acidic ionic liquid [Hmim]BF4 as catalyst as well as solvent was investigated. Satisfactory results were obtained for the protection of carbonyls as cycloacetals or ketals with diols. The product can be separated conveniently from the reaction system, and the ionic liquid can be reused after removal of water.

Zu ihrer Herstellung hydriert man cyclische Acetale des 2.2-Dimethyl-propan-1.3-diols mit geradkettigen oder verzweigten, gesättigten oder ungesättigten aliphatischen Aldehyden mit 3 bis 20 Kohlenstoffatomen an Kupferchromit- oder Nickelkatalysatoren bei 150 bis 350 bar und 150 bis 280°C. Die erhaltenen Monoether des 2.2-Dimethylpropan-1.3-diols verwendet man vorzugsweise als Weichmacheralkohole.
