    A process for preparing b-b dimers having anti-UV and antioxidant properties, from p-hydroxycinnamic esters and amides disubstituted in the ortho position with respect to the phenol function and from ketones disubstituted in the ortho position with respect to the phenol, in particular, from sinapic acid esters and amides and ketone analogs. The dimers of formulae (I), (II), (III) and (IV) as obtained by means of the process according to the present disclosure can be used for the production of polymers/plastics (in plastics technology), or for the protection of plants against the cold and as cosmetic or food-processing ingredients, for example. The process may be used to form biobased anti-UV molecules.

    The instant invention provides two-chain IGF-1 superagonists which are derivatives of the naturally occurring single-chain IGF-1 having an abbreviated C domain. The invention also provides synthetic and semi-synthetic DNA sequences, recombinant DNA vectors and transformed host cells useful in the recombinant production of these analogs. The invention also provides pharmaceutical formulations comprising these IGF-1 analogs. The invention also provides methods of using these analogs in a variety of therapeutic applications. The instant invention provides IGF-1 analogs of the formula:         BCn,A   (1) wherein: B is the B domain of IGF-1 or a functional analog thereof, C is the C domain of IGF-1 or a functional analog thereof, n is the number of amino acids in the C domain and is from about 6 to about 12, and A is the A domain of IGF-1 or a functional analog thereof.

    The present invention provides a method of providing acute neuroprotection by inducing the erythropoietin (EPO) signaling pathway in neuronal cells close to or subsequent to the time of excitatory insult; and inducing an insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling pathway in the neuronal cells close to or subsequent to the time of excitatory insult, thereby producing a synergistic acute neuroprotective effect in the neuronal cells. The invention also provides a method of preventing or reducing the severity of a neurologic condition in a subject by administering to the subject EPO or an active fragment or analog thereof at a dose of at most 2000 U/kg; and administering to the subject an IGF or an active fragment or analog thereof, thereby providing neuroprotection and preventing or reducing the severity of the neurologic condition. Such a method can be used to prevent or reduce the severity of, for example, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, epilepsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, a movement disorder, HIV-associated dementia, HIV-associated neuropathy, neuropathic pain, migraine, glaucoma, drug addiction, drug withdrawal, drug dependency, depression or anxiety.
