chemistry. Thermodynamic analysis of [Mn(III)(PY5)(OH)](2+) and the reduced product, [Mn(II)(PY5)(H(2)O)](2+), estimates the strength of the O-H bond in the metal-bound water in the Mn(II) complex to be 82 (+/-2) kcal mol(-)(1), slightly less than that of the O-H bond in the related reduced ironcomplex, [Fe(II)(PY5)(MeOH)](2+). [Mn(III)(PY5)(OH)](2+) reacts with hydrocarbon substrates at rates comparable

the absence and presence of molecular oxygen are examined by using laserflashphotolysis. Upon laserphotolysis of xanthene-9-carboxylate incorporated within the supercages of NaY in the absence of oxygen, prompt formation of the xanthyl radical and the xanthylium cation is observed. The xanthyl radical is formed by photoionization of xanthene-9-carboxylate to the corresponding acyloxy radical that
The photochemistry of 9-xanthenyl radicals produced by pulseradiolysis of xanthene in 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE) and CCl4 was studied by means of successive laserflashphotolysis. Photobleaching due to chlorine atom transfer from solvents to the excited 9-xanthenyl radical was observed with quantum yields of 0.04 and 0.29 in 1,2-DCE and CCl4, respectively.
