RESULTS OF MEDICAL SURVEYS & STUDIES ON SAFETY OF FLUORESCENT WHITENING AGENTS (FWA'S) CONTAINING DIAMINOSTILBENE DISULFONATE WERE COMPILED & CRITICIZED. CONCLUSION THAT FWA'S ARE PRACTICALLY NONTOXIC.
4,4'-Diamino-2,2'-stilbenedisulfonic acid was evaluated for mutagenicity in the Salmonella/microsome preincubation assay using a standard protocol approved by the National Toxicology Program. Doses of 0, 100, 333, 3333, 4000, 4500, and 5000 ug/plate were tested in four Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA98, TA100, TA1535, and TA1537) in the presence and absence of Aroclor-induced rat or hamster liver S9. These tests were negative and the highest ineffective dose level tested in any Salmonella tester strain was 5000 ug/plate.
