were detected at complete expense of 3 and 4. The formation of 2 even in the presence of oxygen suggested that 2 may partly be formed by a concerted pathway in the singlet excited state. The present observation reveals that photolysis of α-diketones in oxygen-doped matrix at low temperature provides useful information concerning the reaction pathway of the diketone upon photoexcitation.
