Electrophilic Trifluoromethylation of S-Hydrogen Phosphorothioates

A series of S-hydrogen phosphorothioates have been converted to the corresponding S-trifluoromethyl derivatives upon reaction with the electrophilic trifluoromethylation reagent 1 (trifluoromethyl 1,3-dihydro-3,3-dimethyl-1,2-benziodoxole). Relative rate data were obtained by F-19 NMR monitoring of competition experiments and were evaluated by means of the Taft equation. A high positive polar sensitivity factor of 2.55 was found for electron-rich substrates and a negative one of -0.37 for electron-poor ones, implying the involvement of two different rate-determining steps. Furthermore, the reaction was found to be unaffected by steric factors.

of long chain S-alkyl O,O-dialkyl dithiophosphates, and O-alkyl O,O-dialkyl thionophosphates were obtained by the reaction of red phosphorus with elemental sulfur, alcohols, and industrial fractions of С16–С18 and С20–С26 of higher olefins in the presence of Lewis acid catalysts. The products obtained possess high anticorrosion activities toward mild steel.

Lubricant compositions especially useful as hydraulic fluids contain a metal-free anti-wear or loadcarrying additive containing sulphur and/or phosphorus and an amino succinate ester as corrosion inhibitor. Such compositions are free from heavy metals and have improved environmental acceptability where heavy metals are to be avoided, e.g. in agriculture. The lubricant base stock may be a biodegradable natural oil.

Additive concentrates, lubricating oil compositions and the use thereof are described. The compositions comprise one or more of each of the following oil-soluble additive components: a) a Mannich base ashless dispersant; b) a metal-free sulphur-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent; c) a metal-free phosphorus-containing and nitrogen-containing antiwear and/or extreme pressure agent; and optionally but preferably, d) an amine salt of a carboxylic acid. Oils containing such additive components exhibit excellent performance under heavy duty service such as in the planetary spur gear test. In addition, such oils exhibit good demulsibility in the ASTM D1401 test procedure and good clean gear performance in the CRC L-60 test.
