A method for the formation of synthetic macrocycles with different ring sizes fromdiols is presented. Reacting a simple diolprecursor with electrophilic reagents leads to a cyclic carbonate, sulfite, or phosphate in a single step in 25–60% yield. activated N-Boc hydroxylamines triggers aminofunctionalization-based polycyclizations of tethered alkenes. The processes involve intramolecular stereospecific aza-Prilezhaev alkene aziridination in advance of stereospecific C−N cleavage by a pendant nucleophile. Using this approach, a wide range of alkene anti-1,2-difunctionalizations can be achieved.
