A mild and efficient synthesis of novel benzochromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives is described. A number of 8,10-dichloro-7-aryl-7H-benzo[7,8]chromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidines and 9,11-dichloro-12-aryl-12H-benzo[5,6]chromeno[2,3-d]pyrimidines were synthesised by the cyclisation of 2-amino-4-aryl-4H-benzo[h]chromene-3-carbonitriles or 3-amino-1-aryl-1H-benzo[f] chromene-2-carbonitriles with bis(trichloromethyl)
