    An organic halide activator component is used in combination with a halogen-free organoammonium molybdate or tungstate catalyst and a halogen-free trialkylaluminum cocatalyst in the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornene functional monomers. The activator component is characterized by having 1 or 2 halogen substituents per molecule with the proviso that said halogen substituent(s) is not bonded to a carbon that contains a double bond. The organic halide activators of this invention enhance the conversion of monomer to polymer without the corrosion problems inherent with prior activated metathesis catalytic systems.
