  Benzothiazoles of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents H, NH.sub.2 or R.sub.1, R.sub.1 denoting alkyl or aryl, and it being possible for the ring A to have other substituents, are obtained in a simple manner by reacting the readily accessible compounds of the formula ##STR2## in which X denotes a leaving group and Y denotes NO.sub.2 or NH.sub.2, with specified amounts of a compound of the formula ##STR3## The compounds I are intermediates for dyestuffs and plant-protection agents.
