There is disclosed a spectacle lens (700) comprising: a front surface; a back surface; a peripheral edge; and a vision correcting area (720) having a refractive error correction wherein at least a portion of the refractive error correction is based on a lens prescription determined by a wave front analysis of a wearer's eye. The vision correcting area corrects non-conventional refractive error to provide at least a part of the wearer's vision correction. The peripheral edge is capable of being modified to fit within an eyeglass frame.

An ophthalmic lens system is disclosed which comprises a fixed optical power region having a progressive addition optical power region; and a dynamic optical power region, which may comprise an electro-active element, in optical communication therewith. The system may be arranged such that when electrical power is applied to the dynamic optical power region, the dynamic optical power region adds optical power that is additive to that of the progressive addition optical power region of said lens, but when no electrical power is applied the dynamic optical power region does not alter the focal length of the lens.
A system in accord with the present invention includes a first optical lens (2900) having a first outer surface (292), a second outer surface, and an outer perimeter (291), an electro-active refractive matrix (299); and a conductor coupled to the electro-active matrix. An alternative system in accord with the present invention includes a frame, the frame having a lens support and a temple region; an optical lens coupled to the lens support, the optical lens including an electro-active refractive matrix; a controller coupled to the electro-active refractive matrix; and a range finder coupled to the controller.

Disclosed are eyeglasses and a corresponding method for providing vision correction using eyeglasses. The eyeglasses comprise an electro-active lens; a switch adapted to produce a signal in response to movement of a user's head; and a controller operably connected to the electro-active lens for receiving the signal from the switch and changing a refractive index of the electro-active lens. Said switch may be controlled by an accelerometer or microgyroscope so as to produce the signal in response to movement of a user's head.
Disclosed is an ophthalmic hybrid lens comprising a multi-focal progressive lens having two or more fixed focal powers, the multi-focal progressive lens providing correction for distance vision and add power for correction of near vision, the add power being lower than that required for fully corrected near vision; and an electro-active lens element for providing variable focal power. The hybrid lens is operable such that it provides a final add power for correction of near vision that is the total additive power of the add power for correction of near vision provided by the multi-focal progressive lens and the additional required add power generated by the electro-active lens.
