    An imaging element contains an energy-activatable image precursor composition comprising a cobalt III complex having releasable ligands which react with an image forming material to form a visible image. The element also contains a photoinhibitor which, on activating exposure, inhibits the release of ligands from the cobalt III complex or inhibits their image forming action. Images may be formed by imagewise activating the photoinhibitor, preferably with radiation longer than 300 nm, and thereafter activating the image precursor composition, for instance by heating. Images of a different sense may be formed by varying the exposure and activation treatments of the element.

    Novel adducts of phthalaldehyde are disclosed, as well as imaging compositions incorporating them. The adducts are phthalans or isoindolines having the generic formula: wherein Z1 represents the non-metallic atoms necessary to complete a heterocyclic ring system having from 9 to 13 nuclear atoms in from 2 to 3 fused rings; Q represents -O-, >NSO2R2, or -S-; Y represents -OH when Q is or >NSO2R2 and Y is -OR5, -CHR3R4, NR6R7, or -S03M when 0 is -O- or -S-; R1 represents pentafluorophenyl, -CnXH3-n or R2 represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aralkyl group having from 1 to 11 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or alkaryl having from 6 to 11 carbon atoms; R3 and R4 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, a -SO2CH3, -N02, or alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R5 represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms or a group of the structural formula: R6 and R7 each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an -SO2R2 group, or taken together, the atoms necessary to complete a ring having one of the structural formulas: and R13 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; M is a metal; X is a halogen; and n is 1, 2 or 3.

    A process for producing a quinone of the formula wherein n is zero, 1 or 2; Y' is alkoxy; Y2 is H, C1, Br or alkoxy; and R' and R" are independently selected from H, alkyl and phenyl, which comprises the steps of: (a) reacting a tetrabromide of the formula with potassium iodide; (b) reacting the product of step (a) with a 2-alkoxy-1,4-benzoquinone, to give the desired quinone when Y2 is H; (c) if desired, reacting the quinone in which Y2 is H with C12 or Br2, to give the desired quinone in which Y2 is C1 or Br; and (d) if desired, reacting the quinone in which Y2 is C1 or Br with a lithium, sodium or potassium alkoxide, to give the desired quinone in which Y2 is alkoxy.
