  The chiral triply silyl-protected 2,4,6-trihydroxycyclo-hexanones la and 1c were shown to be excellent precursors for the synthesis of chiral acyclic 1,3-diols. A three-step sequence provided easy access to syn- and anti-1,3-diols 4 (69-75% over three steps).
