  2-(4-aminobutoxy) stilbenes of the general formula wherein R is wherein R1 and R2 which are alike or different are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and C1-C5 alkyl or wherein Z is selected from the group consisting of wherein R3 is C1-C5 wherein R4 is hvdroaen. C1-C5 alkvl or Ci-Cs hydroxyalkyl; m and n are each integers ofO to7; and m + n is an integer of 1 to 7, or the acid addition salts thereof found useful as pharmaceutical agents, particularly as anticonvulsants and skeletal muscle relaxants, and pharmaceutical compositions containing these substances are disclosed. These compounds are prepared by reacting 2-(4-halogenobutoxy) stilbene with an amine of formula R-H wherein R is as defined above.
