The formation of (2R) 1-[(t-butyldiphenylsilyl)oxy]-2-furanylethanol (4) and anhydro sugar 13 from propargyl 6-O-t-butyldiphenylsilyl-2,3-dideoxyhex-2-en-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (1) and propargyl 4-O-allyl-6-O-t-butyldiphenylsilyl-2,3-dideoxyhex-2-en-alpha-D-glucopyranoside 10, respectively, is described.

The Brønsted leaving group (β1g) plot for the alkalinehydrolysis of fluorene-9-carboxylate esters in the pH region corresponding to the existence of the ester anion shows a minimum flanked by a region of high negative β1g(-1·01), corresponding to an E1cb pathway and, for esters of pK1g > 9·5, a region of positive β1g(+0·11).

The reaction of thiomethoxybenzylidene Meldrum'sacid (5-SMe) with thiolate and alkoxide ion nucleophiles is shown to proceed by the two-step addition-elimination SNV mechanism in which the tetrahedral intermediate accumulates to detectable levels.
