Phenylselenophosphonicdichloride brings about preparatively useful oxygen–seleniumexchange reactions in conjugated carbonyl and masked carbonyl compounds, thus enabling tertiary selenoamides, indolizine-3-selenoaldehydes, 1,2-dithiol-3-selones, 1,6aλ4-dithia-6-selenapentalenes, and 6aλ4-thia-6-selena-1,2-diazapentalenes to be prepared.

The selenium analogue of Lawesson's reagent, [PhP(Se)(mu-Se)](2) is an effective reagent for synthesizing N,N-disubstituted selenoamides. The reaction is carried out under mild conditions (room temperature) and affords the selenoamide in higher yield than using other selenation reagents. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
