The parent system 1H-benz[de]isoquinoline 1 was synthesized by the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and cycloreversion method, or by direct reaction of bromo-alkylidene 7 with ammonia. N-Substituted derivatives 10 and 11 were also prepared from 7 by treatment with benzylamine and phenylamine, respectively. 1H-Benz[de]isoquinoline 1 tautomerizes to benz[de]isoquinolinium-1-ide 2.
