    A liquid-crystalline polyester production method with a shortened reaction time and improved productivity per unit time by using an organic basic compound containing one nitrogen atom in a molecule is achieved by a liquid-crystalline polyester production method comprising carrying out acylation reaction and/or ester-exchange in the presence of an organic basic compound containing one nitrogen atom in one molecule and satisfying the following inequality (1): 0< A+ 0.4× B (1) wherein, A and B satisfy A=(Ec h+ −Ec)/(Ep h+ −Ep)}−1 and B=(φf/φfp)−1; Ec denotes the heat of formation of the organic basic compound; Ec h+ denotes the heat of formation of a compound coordinated by proton; Ep denotes the heat of formation of pyridine; and Ep h+ denotes the heat of formation of pyridine coordinated by proton to the nitrogen atom; φf and φfp independently denote parameters relevant to the steric angles.

    A melt processable poly(ester-amide) which is capable of forming an anisotropic melt phase is provided. The poly(ester-amide) of the present invention consists essentially of the recurring units (a) 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl moiety, (b) aryl dicarboxyl moiety or trans-1,4-dicarboxycyclohexane moiety, (c) an aromatic moiety capable of forming an amide linkage in the polymer and (d) optionally, dioxyaryl moiety in the proportions indicated. Preferably, the aromatic moiety capable of forming an amide linkage is p-aminophenol or p-phenylene-diamine. The resulting poly(ester-amide) exhibits a melting temperature below 400°C., preferably below 350°C. The poly(ester-amide) of the present invention is preferably formed by a melt polymerisation technique.

    A novel polyester is provided which has been found to exhibit an optically anisotropic melt phase which enables it readily to undergo melt processing to form quality moulded articles possessing unusually high impact properties, etc. The polyester of the present invention contains recurring 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl, 4-oxybenzoyl and 1,4-dicarboxycyclohexane moieties in addition to a moiety derived from an aromatic diol in the proportions indicated. The hydrogen atoms present upon the aromatic rings optionally may be at least partially substituted (as described). The polyester is capable of forming the desired anisotropic melt at a temperature below approximately 350°C., and in a particularly preferred embodiment at a temperature below approximately 320°C.

    A novel polyester is provided which has been found to exhibit an optically anisotropic melt phase which enables it readily to undergo melt processing to form quality fibres, films, moulded articles, etc. The polyester of the present invention contains recurring 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl moieties in addition to moieties derived from at least one aromatic diol and trans-1,4-cyciohexanedicarboxylic acid in the proportions indicated. The hydrogen atoms present upon the rings of these moieties optionally may be at least partially substituted (as described). The polyester is capable of forming the desired anisotropic melt at a temperature below approximately 350=C., and in a particularly preferred embodiment at a temperature below approximately 320°C.
