A metal-free procedure for the synthesis of thioethers is described via the base-promoted reductive coupling of tosylhydrazones with thiols through an insertion of a carbene into the S–H bond.

An efficient and mild one-pot graphene oxide (GO)-catalyzed sequential dehydrationâhydrothiolation reaction has been developed for the first time from a mixture of secondary aryl alcohols and thiols. The resulting unsymmetrical thioethers were prepared under metal-free conditions. The catalyst can be reused for five runs with appreciable conversions.
