  Polymers containing by weight (i) from about 50 to about 85 parts of units derived from at least one monomer (FM) having the formula wherein R1 is straight or branched-chain perfluoroalkyl containing 4-20 carbons; R is H or CH3; and n is an integer from 1-15; and (ii) from about 50 to about 15 parts of units derived from 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate and/or acrylate (CHPM/A) or their bromo analogs. Preferably, the polymers contain by weight between 65 and 75 parts of units derived from FM and 35-25 parts of units derived from CHPM/A, particularly a copolymer consisting essentially by weight of 75 percent of a mixture of FM and 25 percent of CHPM. Polymers impart superior oil- and water-repellency and anti-soiling characteristics to fibrous substrates, and may be applied as a spin finish, particularly to nylon filaments.

  The present invention addresses the problem of providing a fluorine-free water repellent which can impart excellent initial water repellency and laundering-resistant water repellency to fibers of a wide range of kinds. The water repellent treatment agent is an aqueous emulsion which contains no fluorine-containing ingredient and comprises a hybrid emulsion that contains a water repellent component and a crosslinking component capable of reacting with the water repellent component, the two components being included in each particle. It is preferable that the crosslinking component be a blocked isocyanate. It is preferable that the water repellent component and the crosslinking component be contained in amounts of 20-90 mass% and 10-80 mass%, respectively, based on the solid components of the water repellent treatment agent.

  A laundry additive composition is provided that includes at least one zeta potential modifier, a fluoropolymer, a hydrophobic agent with a melting point or glass transition temperature below 100° C., and an antimicrobial active for imparting fabric protection benefits to a fabric, such as improved stain and soil resistance, oil repellency, water repellency, softness, wrinkle and damage resistance, and better hand feel, as well as imparting microbiocidal or microbiostatic properties to the fabric and/or washing machine surfaces. Laundry additive compositions can be used as a pretreatment prior to washing, through soaking a fabric or garment. Alternately, they can be added to a washing treatment liquor that comprises either the wash or rinse cycle of an automatic washing machine, to first provide and then maintain and refresh fabric protection benefits imparted to the fabric. Following use of a first treatment composition, protective benefits are maintained and refreshed by means of a second treatment operation employing a second treatment composition. The second treatment composition may have lower active levels of the protective agents to provide for economical and periodic maintenance of the imparted fabric protection benefits and/or refresh the microbiocidal or microbiostatic properties imparted to fabrics and/or washing machine surfaces.
