    The present invention is directed to a novel, low-toxicity and environmentally-friendly violet smoke generating composition. The composition comprises a mixture of at least one red dye and at least one blue dye, a coolant, an oxidizer, a binder, and a non-sulfur particulate fuel that is also a burn-control agent having two different particle size distributions. Preferably the fuel comprises a mixture of granulated sucrose and sucrose 10×.

    The present invention is directed to a novel, low-toxicity red smoke generating composition and a method of making the same, comprising at least one red dye, a coolant, an oxidizer, a non-sugar binder, and a non-sulfur particulate fuel that is also a burn-control agent having at least one particle size distribution. Preferably, the red dye comprises an anthracene or anthraquinone-based dye and the fuel comprises a sugar or mixture of sugars.

    Different nitrates were used as sources of nitrosonium ion to obtain diazonium salts. Diverse azo compounds were synthetized in acetonitrile giving very good yields and free of by-products in comparison with traditional synthesis.
