A new strategy for the synthesis of benzoxanthenes catalyzed by proline triflate in water

Catalyzed by proline triflate, benzoxanthenes were obtained in good yields from the condensation of naphthols, aldehydes, and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in water. A possible mechanism of this reaction is proposed.
Libraries of benzoxanthenes, as well as of benzochromenes, were efficiently synthesized via one-pot, three-componentreactions of 2-naphthol, aldehydes, and cyclic 1,3-diketones/malononitrile/ethyl cyanoacetate in the presence of catalytic amount of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) under solvent free conditions. A facile and efficient procedure has been developed by one-pot condensation of β-naphthol, aldehydes, and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds for the synthesis of 8,9,10,12-tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthen-11-one or 8,9-dihydrobenzo-[f]cyclopenta[b]chromen-10(11H)-one derivatives catalyzed by p-toluenesulfonic acid undersolvent-free and sonication conditions.
