Process for the production of a rubber-reinforcing polyester cord having excellent chemical stability which is useful as a reinforcing material for tires and belts, particularly as a carcass material for light truck tire, which comprises melt-spinning a polyester comprising predominantly polyethylene terephthalate and having an intrinsic viscosity of not less than 0.75, taking up the resulting spun yarns under cooling to obtain solid yarns, wherein filaments have a birefringence of 0.010 to 0.050, drawing the solid yarns at a draw ratio of 2.0 to 4.0 times, twisting the drawn yarns at a rate of 5 turns or more per 10 cm to obtain a cord, applying thereto an adhesive for a rubber, and then heat-treating at a temperature of not higher than 220°C, preferably of 170°C to 210°C.
