  An ashless dispersant/viscosity index improving substance comprising an ethylene a-olefin copolymer carrying grafted succinic groups amidated with ether amine groups, such as those derived from ether amines having the structure wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group and R1 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group. The invention includes a process for making such substances, formulations additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions containing the same, and a method of imparting dispersancy properties to a lubricating oil comprising including therein such a substance.
