Triflic anhydride in combination with 2-fluoropyridine effectively dehydrates secondary amides to afford nitriles under mild reaction conditions. The reaction is general in scope and compatible with the use of aliphatic, α,β-unsaturated, aromatic, and heteroaromatic amides bearing either secondary, tertiary, or benzylic N-alkyl groups.
