  The preparation of a solubilised 2,2': 6',2''-terpyridine ligand is described together with the characterisation of an unexpected intermediate. Homoleptic complexes of the solubilised ligand 4'-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2': 6',2''-terpyridine, 1, with cobalt(II), cobalt(III), ruthenium(II), iron(II) and nickel(II) have been prepared. The ligand is slightly electron releasing and solubilises the complexes in organic media. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
