  Sulfonylurea derivatives of the formula or wherein R is CH3 or C2H5; L and J are aromatic groups of defined structure; and agriculturally acceptable salts thereof; exhibit herbicidal activity. Some also exhibit plant growth regulant activity. The compounds may be formulated for agricultural use in conventional manner. They may be made by a variety of synthetic routes, e.g. by reacting an appropriate aromatic sulfonyl isocyanate with the appropriate aminoheterocycle.
