tri-phenylphosphine to selenocyanogen solution in methylene chloride and tetrahydrofuran reacts below −60° with primaryalcohols to produce directly the corresponding alkyl selenocyanates and alkyl diselenides in good yields. With secondaryalcohols mixtures of selenocyanates and isoselenocyanates are obtained, while tertiary alcohols fail to react with the reagent.

Abstract Allyl samarium bromide is prepared by direct reaction of allyl bromide with samarium metal in the presence of a catalytic amount of iodine. This reacts with alkyl selenocyanates to give the corresponding allyl selenides in excellent yields under neutral and mild conditions.

Selenocyanates possess an extremely high propensity to produce diselenides on reaction with selenols or selenolates. This is effectively observed when one molar equivalent of metal hydride or lithium triethyl borohydride or one fourth molar equivalent of metal borohydrides are reacted with organic selenocyanates.
