    Electro-optical switching studies on 1,3-phenylene based banana shaped liquid crystals
    摘要:
    This work deals with the study of the thermotropic liquid crystalline properties of new asymmetric bent core liquid crystals. The thermotropic properties was analyzed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetric analysis and variable temperature X-ray diffraction measurements. Effect of equal terminal chain with asymmetric bent core system on mesomorphic behavior was examined. The shorter methyl chain compound 10a of exhibits B-1 mesophase and higher homologs (10b and 10c) shows antiferroelectric B-2 mesophases, which was studied by electro-optical measurements.   • Symmetric bent-core mesogens with m-carborane and adamantane as the central units

    Several members of two homologous series of symmetric bent-shaped compounds with either m-carborane or adamantane (1[n] or 2[n], n = 9–13) in the central position were synthesized and investigated by optical, calorimetric, X-ray diffraction, and electro-optical methods. Results show that the two shortest members of the m-carborane series, 1[9] and 1[10], exhibit an intercalated lamellar B6 phase. The adamantane derivatives 2[9]–2[13] display a monotropic weakly birefringent soft crystalline or crystalline phase with homochiral domains. Neither phase undergoes polarization switching in an electric field.

  • Molecular Design of Nonchiral Bent-Core Liquid Crystals with Antiferroelectric Properties

    Novel bent-core (banana-shaped) liquid crystals without Schiff-base units have been synthesized and investigated by polarized light optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray scattering, and electrooptical investigations. These molecules are 4-(4-alkylbenzoyloxy)benzoates and 4-(4-alkoxybenzoyloxy)benzoates of resorcinol, 3,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl, and 4,4"-dihydroxy-1,1':3',1"-terphenyl. Three different mesophases were found depending on the molecular structure and the length of the terminal alkyl chains: a rectangular columnar phase, a highly ordered low-temperature mesophase, and an antiferroelectric switchable fluid smectic mesophase designated as SmCPA. The influence of the molecular structure on the occurrence of the SmCPA phase was investigated. The spontaneous polarization of these molecules is quite high (P-S = 500-700 nC cm(-2)) and specially those molecules with long alkyl chains and short bent-core structures have low melting points and broad regions of this switchable mesophase. Furthermore, first examples of antiferroelectric switchable bent-core molecules with semifluorinated terminal chains will be described.

    Thermotropic liquid crystals with fluorocarbon chains have attracted much attention, because they are feasible to form smectic phases. Herein, two series of chiral compounds with semiperfluorocarbon chains were designed and synthesized. These compounds were characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, F-19 NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Phase transition behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. Members of the two-ring series do not exhibit liquid crystalline phases. However, the three-ring analogues exhibit an enantiotropic SmA phase. When the length of alkyl chains is sufficient, an enantiotropic SmB phase is also identified.
