‘Prodigious Riches’: The Wealth of Jamaica Before the American Revolution

This article determines new estimates for the wealth of Jamaica in 1774. These revisions push up previous calculations by between one-half and two-thirds and demonstrate that Jamaica was the wealthiest colony in British America, both in terms of total wealth and in regard to the wealth of individual colonists. These revised estimates also reinforce the extent to which wealth in the Americas was established on the backs of black slaves. The re-evaluation of Jamaican wealth demonstrates how valuable the West Indies were within the empire and suggests that the customary regional classifications of British American colonies need to be rethought.

This protocol represents direct access to a range of 2-carbonylated aryl benzoate derivatives, which are important building blocks in the synthesis of natural and pharmacological compounds. A process for preparation of an optical compensatory sheet is disclosed. The process comprises the steps in order of: coating a support with a photosensitive compound; exposing the photosensitive compound to beams of linearly polarized light emitted from a semiconductor laser to form an orientation layer; coating the orientation layer with a liquid crystal composition containing polymerizable liquid crystal molecules; aligning the liquid crystal molecules to form an optically anisotropic layer; and then polymerizing the liquid crystal molecules to fix alignment.
