Silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions containing silylethynyl pentacenes are disclosed. Exemplary pentacene compounds have 6, 13 -silylethynyl substitution with one or more groups (e.g., R, R' and R") covalently bonded to each Si atom of the silylethynyl groups. Methods of making and using silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions containing silylethynyl pentacenes are also disclosed. Substrates and devices comprising the silylethynyl pentacenes and compositions are also disclosed.

Pauson–Khand reaction (PKR) of siloxy-tethered 1,7-enynes for the synthesis of cyclopentaoxasilinones has been developed. This transformation can be performed on a multigram scale and is characterized by a broad substrate scope, functional group compatibility, and high chemo- and diastereoselectivity. fluorous silylated bicyclononane, prepared from the titanium-mediated annulation of 1-acetylcyclohexene and a fluorous-tagged allylsilane, was successfully detagged under Fleming-type oxidation conditions. The stereochemistry of the resulting hydroxylated product indicates retention of configuration upon detagging in line with the non-fluorous variant of this transformation.

In various aspects and embodiments the invention provides a method of preparing a cyclopentaoxasilinone, the method comprising contacting a siloxy-tethered 1,7-enyne with a thioether promoter. In another aspect, the invention provides a method of preparing a cyclopentaoxaborininone, the method comprising contacting a boronic ester-tethered 1,7-enyne with a thioether promoter.
