of NO/Ar and O(2)/Ar mixtures gives new metal-independent infrared bands at 1458.3 and 806.1 cm(-)(1), and at 1433.3 and 983.2 cm(-1), in addition to known O(-4) and (NO)(-2) absorptions. The ionizationenergy (IE) for ThO has been determined using photoionization efficiency and mass-analyzed threshold ionizationmeasurements. An IE of 6.6038(12) eV was obtained, which was appreciably higher than the result from previous appearance potential measurements [6.1(1) eV]. The revised IE is 0.3 eV greater than that of atomic Th, indicating that neutral ThO is more tightly bound than ThO(+)

The black residue found on treating thorium metal with concentrated HCl is shown by chemical tests to be equivaleri to Th(II) in the form of ThO. Neutron diffraction indicates a lattice probably of the ZnS-type, which is consistent with ThO.
