A direct synthesis of α‐alkylated arylacetamides from arylacetonitriles and primaryalcohols has been accomplished for the first time. A process for the preparation of an amide of the formula (I)
wherein R is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or phenyl group, by hydrolysis of a nitrile of the formula (II)
