A New Motif in Halogen Bonding: Cooperative Intermolecular S−Br⋅⋅⋅O, O⋅⋅⋅F, and F⋅⋅⋅F Associations in the Crystal Packing of α,ω‐Di(sulfonyl bromide) Perfluoroalkanes

At 2.911(4) Å, the S−Br⋅⋅⋅O halogen bonds in BrSO2(CF2)4SO2Br are 0.316 Å shorter than the corresponding S−Cl⋅⋅⋅O interactions in ClSO2(CF2)4SO2Cl, while these distances are much more comparable in BrSO2(CF2)6SO2Br, BrSO2(CF2)8SO2Br, and ClSO2(CF2)6SO2Cl. The current results are clearly indicative of stronger halogen bonding to the larger, heavier halogen bromine.
