    The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition comprising a dispersion of particles of a grafted ethylenic polymer in a liquid fatty phase, and a film-forming agent. The film-forming agent may be soluble or dispersible in the said liquid fatty phase. The composition may contain an aqueous phase, in which case the film-forming agent may be soluble or dispersible in the aqueous phase. A subject of the invention is also the use of a combination of such a grafted ethylenic polymer and of a film-forming agent to improve the staying power and/or the transfer resistance of the said composition on keratin materials.

    A staged method of forming vinyl (e.g. acrylate) copolymer by solution polymerization which involves a) charging up to 90% of at least two vinyl monomers of the vinyl copolymer to a first stage reaction zone, b) polymerizing the at least two vinyl monomers to about 10 to 90% conversion in the presence of an initiator at an initiator to monomers mole ratio within a specified range, the monomer content of one of the at least two vinyl monomers of the copolymer formed in the first stage being higher than the content of another of the at least two vinyl monomers in the first stage polymer, the weight average molecular weight of the first stage copolymer being about 2000 to 500,000 Daltons; and c) continuing polymerization in the presence of an initiator in a second stage while continuously adding the balance of the monomers of said vinyl copolymer to the polymerization reaction mixture of the first stage at a monomers ratio lower in the one monomer than in the first stage monomers ratio, the initiator to monomers mole ratio in the second stage being different than in the first stage; the vinyl copolymer formed gradually continuously changing in molecular weight from the first stage and increasing in concentration of the one monomer during the second stage, the weight average molecular weight of the total copolymer of both stages being about 2,000 to 250,000 Daltons.

    An abrasive element comprising a substrate having on a surface thereof particles of an abrasive material secured by a non-metallic binding medium wherein at least the surface of the element between the particles of abrasive material contains a fluorochemical selected from the group consisting of compounds comprising a fluorinated aliphatic group attached to a polar group or moiety and fluoropolymers having a molecular weight of at least 750 and comprising a non-fluorinated polymeric backbone having a plurality of pendant fluorinated aliphatic groups, said aliphatic groups comprising the higher of (a) a minimum of three C-F bonds, or (b) in which 25% of the C-H bonds have been replaced by C-F bonds such that the fluorochemical comprises at least 15% by weight of fluorine. The fluorochemical may be applied as a layer coated over the existing layers of an abrasive element or it may be incorporated into at least the coating formulation which will form the outermost layer of the binding medium. The abrasive elements may be in the form of sheets, blocks, discs, pads, belts etc. The presence of the fluorochemical serves to reduce the loading of the abrading surface in use, thereby extending the working life of the abrasive element.

    A cured resin product obtained by mixing (A) a compound having an addition-polymerizable group and capable of yielding a thermoplastic resin by its polymerization and (B) a thermosetting resin to form a uniform solution or dispersion and then curing the component (B) while simultaneously polymerizing the component (A), a process for producing the same, a resin composition, and the use of the same. As compound A olefinically unsaturated monomers like styrene, acrylonitrile or (meth)acrylates, particularly perfluoroalkyl(meth)acrylates, are preferred. The thermosetting resin is for example a cyanate, maleimide, phenolic or preferably epoxy resin in combination with a suitable curing agent. The compositions are used for water repellent coatings or for sealing semiconductor elements.
