Nickel-Catalyzed C−S Bond Formation via Decarbonylative Thioetherification of Esters, Amides and Intramolecular Recombination Fragment Coupling of Thioesters
A nickelcatalyzed cross‐coupling protocol for the straightforward C−Sbond formation has been developed. Various mercaptans and a wide range of ester and amide substrates bearing various substituents were tolerated in this process which afforded products in good to excellent yields. Furthermore, an intramolecular protocol for the synthesis of thioethers starting from thioesters has been developed

converted into the alkylated arenes and ketone products, respectively. The utility of this newly developed protocol was demonstrated by its wide substrate scope, broad functional group tolerance and application in the synthesis of keyintermediates for the synthesis of bioactive compounds. DFT studies on the oxidative addition step helped rationalizing this intriguing reaction chemoselectivity: whereas
simple condensation first converts ketones into prearomatic intermediates that then act as activated radical sources for cross-coupling with aryl halides. Our strategy enables the direct benzylation/benzoylation of (hetero)arenes under mild reaction conditions with high functional group tolerance.

synthetic chemists. This report describes the development of a nickel-catalyzeddecarbonylative reaction that couples (hetero)aromatic esters with a broad scope of amines to form (hetero)aryl amine products. The successful realization of this transformation was predicated on strategic design of the cross-coupling partners (phenol esters and silyl amines) to preclude conventional reactivity that forms

Two efficient protocols for the nickel-catalyzed aryl–alkyl cross-coupling reactions using esters as coupling components have been established. The methods enable the selective oxidative addition of nickel to acyl C–O and aryl C–O bonds and allow the aryl–alkyl cross-coupling via decarbonylative bond cleavage or through cleavage of a C–O bond with high efficiency and good functional group compatibility
