Contrary to previous reports, monothioacetylacetone is found to consist of a mixture of enol and enthiol tautomers in organic solvents as revealed by UV visible spectral observations. The enthiol content increases with temperature and with solvent polarity. The absorption characteristics and tautomeric equilibria are discussed in terms of the π- and all-valence-electron quantum chemical methods.
